Make It Yours
Hey family!
I actually went a long time hating exercise.
Now, I am fully aware that this coming from someone trying to build a brand encouraging people to grow closer to themselves through movement can sound kinda off. But if you have a moment, I’ll walk you through something I learned that can be applied to any area of your life right now.
Basketball had become a major stressor in my life. Overtime, I could barely walk onto the court without feeling sick. I hated it, and I hated that the anxiety I felt playing a child’s game had so much power over me.
Even after putting basketball down, I could see the residual effects leaking onto my own relationship to exercise. So I went a while avoiding the gym, which for me was incredibly anxiety-inducing at the time.
With some support from those around me, I started to ease my way back into fitness. I didn’t expect it, but I started to love the process more than I can even explain.
This change was only possible because of a change in my perspective: I can take my current relationship with this thing that is causing me so much stress, and I can turn it into something that fulfills me. I have the choice to find a way to do that for myself.
The GetMactive motto is “movement is medicine.” And although that’s true on many levels, movement is medicine to me because it was the first time I took real agency over my life. It was my first time taking my feelings about something that made me so unhappy, and creating and molding it into something I now love.
This week, I encourage you to make it work for you, whatever “it” is. Bend it, break it, put it back together, cook it, hell…deep fry it if you need to. Just do whatever it takes to make whatever “it” is work for you. This is the art of making “it” yours.
I’ll leave you with my favorite quote from Lao Tzu:
“Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation.”
Reflection question: What has power over you, and how can you flip it around to fulfill your life?
